At Gulf Harbour Marina, we love seeing kids getting out on the water and nurturing their love of fishing. During the April school holidays, we thought we’d encourage our local kids to get into the great outdoors by running a kids fishing photo competition. Initially we were offering one prize of a Burnsco tackle bag worth $100, but we were inundated with so many fantastic entries, so we upped the game and offered prizes to the best three entries.
We were lucky to have three celebrity judges pick the winners: Nicky Sinden, host of the ‘Addicted to Fishing’ TV show, Estelle Clifford from the MoreFM Rodney breakfast show, and kids fishing social media sensation Gannett Girl.
There were big fish, little fish, weird fish, and pretty fish, but one thing that was consistent across the board were the huge smiles on the young angler’s faces. One winner, JC Van den Berg, even had an interview on the MoreFM breakfast show with Estelle, who had picked his photo as her favourite. He said he was so excited to have won, he called his grandparents in South Africa to give them the good news.
The competition is the brain child of our team member Jo Davis of Fish’n Chix fame, who is a self-confessed ‘fishing fanatic.’ Jo says “this is the second time the competition has been run, and given the level of interest, we will absolutely be running it again.”
